Fire Hydrant vs Sprinkler System: Which One Does Your Building Need?

When you plan a hotel, hospital, warehouse, mall or high-rise building, two terms come up again and again in every fire safety discussion: fire hydrant system and fire sprinkler system. Many building owners ask us at Mydaddy Microtech (MDM) whether they need one or both. The short answer: most commercial and industrial buildings need both, because they do two very different jobs.

What is a fire hydrant system?

A fire hydrant system is a network of pipes, valves and outlets that supplies large quantities of pressurised water so that trained people – your fire team or the fire brigade – can fight a fire using hoses. A typical system includes:

  • A dedicated fire water tank
  • Main electric pump, diesel pump and jockey pump in a pump room
  • Wet riser / down-comer pipes inside the building
  • Landing valves and hose reels on every floor
  • External yard hydrants around the building
  • Fire brigade inlet connection

The hydrant system is manually operated. Someone has to open a valve, run out the hose and direct water at the fire. It is powerful, but it only works when people are present and trained.

What is a fire sprinkler system?

A sprinkler system is automatic. Sprinkler heads are installed in the ceiling, each with a small glass bulb that bursts at a set temperature (commonly around 68°C). When the bulb breaks, only that sprinkler opens and sprays water directly over the fire. At the same time the alarm valve rings the alarm and the pumps start.

Because it acts on its own, a sprinkler system controls a fire in its early stage – even at night or in an unoccupied area – and buys time for people to evacuate and for the fire brigade to arrive.

Which one does your building need?

Requirements depend on building type, height, built-up area and occupancy, as defined in the National Building Code of India (NBC 2016, Part 4 – Fire and Life Safety) and the local fire authority’s rules. In practice:

  • Hotels, hospitals, malls and high-rise buildings – usually need hydrant, sprinkler, fire alarm and fire extinguishers together.
  • Warehouses and factories – almost always need a hydrant system; sprinklers are needed based on storage height and hazard class.
  • Smaller low-rise buildings – may need only hose reels, extinguishers and alarms.

The right answer for your project comes from the approved drawings and the fire NOC requirements, so it is best to involve a fire fighting contractor at the design stage – not after the civil work is finished.

Why designing both together saves money

Hydrant and sprinkler systems can share the same fire water tank and pump room when they are designed together. This reduces pipe routes, pump sizes and space requirement. Planning them with HVAC, electrical and plumbing services – ideally using BIM coordination – also avoids clashes at site.
